List of Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to book my bike in advance?

We recommend reserving your bike at least a day in advance to ensure availability. Our team is sometimes out guiding tours or may be away from the shop, so booking ahead allows us to make sure a bike is ready and someone is there to receive you. Walk-in rentals are welcome when possible, but a reservation helps avoid an unnecessary trip if we’re not available.

How do I get to Balam Bikes from Flores Island?

The easiest way to reach us from Flores Island is by a short 2-minute boat ride to San Miguel.

We recommend taking a boat from the dock next to Maple y Tocino or the dock next to Hostal Don Cenobio.

At these docks the price is usually Q10 per person. Other docks usually charge more.

Tell the boat captain to take you to “El Caballo de Piedra” in San Miguel. From there, it’s only about a 100 m walk to our shop.

Where can I ride the bikes?

You’re free to explore the area with our bikes. On our website you’ll find a selection of curated routes that we recommend, which are a great way to discover the best trails and viewpoints around Flores and San Miguel. These routes are only suggestions, you’re welcome to create your own adventure as well.

The only requirements are that the bikes are returned in the same condition as when they were rented (aside from normal wear and tear) and that riders respect local rules and regulations. This means not entering private property or areas where bicycles are not permitted.

What happens if my bike has an issue during the ride?

All our clients receive our phone number and WhatsApp contact for assistance. If you’re near Flores or San Miguel, we can usually send someone to help with roadside repairs. If you’re further away, we’ll do our best to assist you remotely so you can get back on the trail.

We don’t charge for normal issues like flat tires or minor mechanical problems. However, if a rescue requires transportation—such as a taxi, bus, or other vehicle to return from a distant location—those transportation costs are the responsibility of the rider.

Do I need to bring an ID?

Yes. Every rider must present a valid ID when picking up a bike. International visitors should bring their passport, and Guatemalan nationals should bring their DPI.

We’ll use the ID to complete the rental waiver and take a photo of it for our records. You will keep your ID with you during the ride. We also offer a safe place at the shop where you can leave personal belongings while you’re out riding.

Can beginners rent bikes too?

Yes, beginners are welcome to rent bikes. However, if it’s your first time riding a mountain bike, we recommend joining one of our guided tours. This allows the guide to show you how to handle the bike on the trails, give riding tips, and answer any questions along the way.

For first-time riders, we recommend the Balam Trail Ride, which is beginner-friendly and a great introduction to the local trails. You can also join one of our beginner-friendly community ride events if you’d like to learn in a relaxed group setting.

Can minors rent bikes?

Minors can rent bikes as long as they are accompanied by an adult who takes responsibility for the rental. The adult does not need to rent a bike themselves, but they must sign the rental agreement for the minors and provide their personal details.

Do you deliver bikes?

In most cases, bikes need to be picked up at our shop in San Miguel. We usually don’t offer delivery, as our team is often guiding tours or working at the shop.

However, in some cases it may be possible to arrange delivery for one or two bikes within the Flores or San Miguel area if requested in advance. Feel free to contact us and we’ll let you know if it’s possible.
